Hydraulic Cylinder Failure
MAI’s analysis of hydraulic cylinders which failed in service revealed embedded particles in the cylinder walls. These particles exhibited extremely high hardness levels. Optical Metallography 200X.
EDS analysis of the embedded particles identified silicon, carbon and oxygen as their main chemical components. Our review of potential sources of these particles soon centered on the hone used to perform surface finishing of the cylinder bore. The hone abrasive, composed of silicon, carbon and silicon dioxide matched the embedded particles and demonstrated that defective cylinder hones were the source of the contaminant.
